If your watching my twitter feed of late you know I have a new PC build going on for my wife.  So this is why I’m not going to be talking today except for the opening and closing of the show.  Mr. Gadgets, aka Bruce Barr, our roving reporter from Kansas City, Missouri has a great report and thoughts about the iPad on the release day two weeks ago.  OK, maybe not the freshest news, but he has some other interesting thoughts as well. So please give a listen to Mr. Gadgets, Bruce Barr.

But first,

I was visited this past Saturday, St. Patrick’s Day, by the holiday “Tech-racaun” who left a nice little present under our Shamrock.  It was a 16″ USB powered and driven portable display by AOC.  The device is the AOC – e1649Fwu and it went on sale on March 16th for $99.99 at many online as well as brick-and-mortar retailers.  This was my chance to pick up this wonderful portable display for myself I was thrilled to receive this that afternoon when my family and I came back from a nice lunch.

I immediately opened up the display and hooked it up to my laptop.  Wow!!  This will come in handy when I have to leave the office and my nice dual display setup and go anywhere and still be able to run dual monitors.  AOC 16" USB DisplayBest of all, I can now have 3 monitors at the office!! Woot!!  yeah the wife rolled her eyes, “but it was on SALE!”  It felt so good to say that and not have a comeback hit me upside the head. Lol.  OK, all kidding aside; I love this thing and Windows 7 will recognize when it is in Landscape or portrait mode automatically, sweet!  It is seriously light considering the size of the unit but still feels well built.  It has a kickstand built in and does not feel cheap despite the light weight.

If you have been looking for a second monitor for travel but don’t want a heavy notmal LCD scree, then check this out.  Now a word of warning, it may not display video depending on the OS you are running (Win-7, Vista, XP) but it was said to be able to show video via the built-in Windows player.  I have not yet been able to do so, however, knowing that it is still great for websites and documents, so think about that before you purchase.  You might not be able to use it for CAD or things of that nature, but having those things run on the normal display and utilizing this one for text or other software applications might be a great setup.

The device is a USB Portable LED Backlit Monitor with a resolution of 1366 x 768, 16:9 format, 500:1 contrast ratio, and a 16ms response time (this is most likely the reason for the issues wAOC 16" Displayith video) and this had a dual USB plug that goes into the laptop (with power brick powering the unit) or the desktop (so you will need two free USB ports to drive this display) and then plugs into the display with a single micro-USB plug.  I was impressed with the rich color and crisp display though the resolution was not that of my laptop.  I would have preferred a 1440 x 900 display to match one of my other displays, but this was fine.  I use it more for browsing and with text based applications.

So if you were looking to get something like this, just take a look around because you can find it almost anywhere for $100 but only through the end of March, then the “Tech-racaun” will take his $40-off deal and disappear.  If you do wind up getting one of these, let me know how you like it or even don’t like it.  I would be interested.

I am a lucky woman; I am married to a geek, and because of this we have a lot of cool gadgets and awesome technology in our house. Now I would like to think that I’m pretty lenient with the purse strings when it comes to my hubby’s tech purchase requests, but once in a while he wants to buy something that costs a tad bit more than I’m comfortable spending. Two years ago he asked if he could get the iPad; on the day it came out no less. Well I was hesitant giving him the go-ahead considering that it would cost an arm and a leg, but then he said that one phrase and he knew I was putty in his hands; “… but honey, it has iBooks, an eReader, and you can download anything you want on to it”. Yep, he got his iPad, or should I say; I got his iPad.

So the first thing I did once he got it connected and synced to my iTunes was fire up iBooks and start shopping. I loved it! It was as easy as pressing a button and viola, my new digital book was ready to read. There were so many books in digital format that I wanted to read that I really had to hold back…considering we were just a tad broke after buying the darn iPad. But I told myself and my hubby that digital books were so much less expensive than real books and because of that I could splurge, well just a little. Hubby was probably kicking himself because when I find a really good book, I don’t do much else but read until it’s finished and the iPad made this extremely easy!

The iPad had a backlight, which meant I could read it in low-light, or no-light like at night when I’m in bed and my hubby is snoring soundly next to me, or even out in the bright sunlight when I would take it to the park to read while the boys played. A couple of features that I found wonderful in iBooks were that it would open up to the exact page where I had previously stopped and that turning a page was a simple tap of the screen. It also had the “one-touch” dictionary, which I found quite handy when reading Pride and Prejudice and Dracula. I was in heaven. But there was a downside, it was a bit heavy and I found myself getting tired of holding it after a while. Though I would try to take it everywhere with me as much as I could…it just wasn’t practical, light weight, or compact enough for me to carry in my purse all the time. To make matters worse, our two boys had discovered those nifty little game apps, which meant I couldn’t read my books if one of them wanted to use it. And one of them was always wanting to use it, especially when we took it on vacation back to the East Coast to visit family. My family had never used an iPad before and was just fascinated with it to where I had to pry it from their hands every now and then so I could check my email and update Facebook. If that poor iPad had an odometer it would have turned over at least once if not twice on that trip alone it was used so much.

My geek hubby, who is always looking for a problem to solve, definitely had one; he had the cool new “gotta have” geek device in the house but it was never in his hands. So for my birthday a year later, I was presented with a Next Generation Kindle. Oh, the giddiness I felt while holding my new toy was wonderful. I was bummed when I found out that I couldn’t transfer any of the ebooks I had purchased on the iPad over to the Kindle, but no matter. I found that Amazon had a better selection of digital content (in my opinion) and I was ready to once again start shopping. I liked that I could purchase new content from either my computer or on the Kindle itself. Using the Kindle‘s arrow keys to navigate was not as easy as iPad, but it was fine. The Kindle did have something going for it the iPad did not, it was light and thin. I could hold it and easily turn the pages with just a press of a button and all with one hand. The battery lasted for days and days depending on how much reading I did, and I did a lot, so it lasted a lot longer than the iPad between charges. The e-Ink display was beautifully crisp and clear, just like real print on real paper making reading easy on my eyes. I admit, I missed having a back light to read by at night, so I purchased a little book light that fit into my Kindle’s cover. I also missed having the one-touch dictionary feature. I know the Kindle has one too, but I never actually took the time to find out how to use it. I really liked how it fit easily into my purse, that it wasn’t too heavy, and was a whole lot easier to pull out and read while waiting at the doctor’s office. But I still used the iPad for everything else; surfing the web, Facebook, email, watching movies, and playing those horribly ADDICTING games. Between me and those boys, my husband never even got to touch the iPad, except when there was a problem with it and once it was fixed, “poof” it was gone again. I think he actually used it for a total of about 3 hours in the past two years that we have had it.

And then, the Kindle Fire was released! I felt really bad for wanting one, considering we already had the iPad and a Kindle, and truly, I have an entire bookshelf FULL of real books to read. So, I just happened to “mention” one day that I thought the Kindle Fire was pretty cool and I would like to have one, “eventually” of course. I was just planting a seed, I was fine, I was content. But on Christmas morning my wonderful hubby would send me on a treasure hunt in a manner only he would come up with. He had placed those funky, square, block style scanner codes, QR Codes, all over the living room behind things. I had to scan each using an app on my phone to find the next one and eventually “the treasure”. I found the what I thought was the present, an Amazon Kindle gift card. “Woo Hoo!” I exclaimed, “I can get more books.” My geek had to inform me that there was one more code to scan, which I did and with it he surprised me with the new Kindle Fire! Best… Gift… Ever!

The Fire has the best features that I loved from the iPad and the Next Gen Kindle. It’s small, lightweight, has a backlit LCD screen, a one-touch dictionary, and you turn the page by tapping the screen. I can also surf the web, check Facebook, read my email, and even watch a movie. As with the Next Gen Kindle, finding new content to read on the Fire is quick and easy. I especially like that I can keep some of my purchases on the device and keep the rest of everything else out in the “cloud”; so no need for lots of memory. The Fire is extremely easy to use and navigation between apps and other digital content is a breeze. The battery life is okay; not as good as the Next Gen Kindle but more comparable to that of the iPad. You can also download games and other useful apps from the Amazon appstore, and as an added bonus, it fit right into my Next Gen Kindle cover, brilliant! Now I’m not quite ready yet to sell or even give away my Next Gen Kindle because I can see several instances where having a “backup” eReader will come in handy in the future. So for now, it’s back in its box on my bookshelf, nice and safe.

So my husband finally solved his problem; he actually gets to use his iPad once again. That is of course when the boys aren’t using it and they are always using it. But I have my Kindle Fire all to myself. I AM a very lucky woman.

I believe that the issue with the term ‘Podcasting”, at least from this Podcaster’s perspective, is that most most people who may be aware that there are podcasts, are just not sure how to get them or what they can expect from them. I have heard on more than one occasion; “If internet shows are so good, why aren’t they on regular TV or radio?” Good question.

I have seen plenty of well produced and highly entertaining or informative shows available on the internet. While it is true that there are an abundance of Geek oriented shows on the internet right now, there are also tons of shows available aimed at those with other than geeky interests and I can only see more coming on the horizon. As far as how to get them , let’s say for argument’s sake that you have a Grandma who might enjoy an Internet video show about quilting or scrpabooking but she doesn’t watch it because she is not sure how to get it. Does she need a computer, an iPad, or a Roku; can she watch it directly on her TV, what? A lot of people right now just don’t know and they might be too intimidated or uninformed to ask.

What independent internet based shows and consumers need in a simplified gateway to one another, there needs to be a large network system like what we have for television and radio. It might be very likely that we see some of the current internet “media networks” like Techpodcasts.com, TWIT.tv, Revision 3, and the like, become larger, more like the current television networks. Perhaps the “new media networks” will begin to help the independents produce and create their content, help secure advertising deals, or maybe just be the delivery conduit for the content. Once there are larger new media networks they will have more Internet TV and Radio shows in their “stable” it will open up the the consumer’s eyes and they will understand that there is more available out on the net than the current networks are able to bring them. Then the purchases of “Smart TVs” or Internet Set-top boxes (Roku, Google TV, Boxee Box, etc.) will go through the roof and “Internet TV and Radio” will truly have come of age. It will be then that the traditional broadcasting companies will have been knocked back on their heels and realize that they are the latest dinosaurs.
