Shapeways brings your photos to life!! Well not exactly, but it gives them real depth. Just check out the sample photos of what Shapeways can do with their Photoshaper. It makes a 3D image out of an opaque plastic that when light is shined through it, it appears to be a Black & White photo. How cool is that. Just put a light source, LED is suggested, to bring the photo to life. How cool of an Anniversary gift to your spouse or present for the Grandparents could this be?
Shapeways is a service that I told you about back on August 4th during Show #212. They can make a 3D object for prototyping or let you create objects to sell on their shop. How cool is that? Now you can upload your 2D photos, they will turn them into a 3D plate that has different thicknesses that let in differing levels of light creating the Black 7 White photo effect. My father and grandfather both would have thought this to be the coolest thing for photography. They loved pohotgraphing everything and loved the Black & White medium. How they would ahve loved to see this. Alas, they can’t, but you can. Check this site out and let me know what you think. I personally will be testing it out by sending in a photo for manufacturing. I think I will present it to my wife, who doesn’t read my blog luckly in cases like this, for our 11th Anneversery. Yeah, that will be a great present. Unique, special, and a subject very near and dear to her heart. I’ll let you see it after it’s presented. No need spoiling EXACTLY what it is just yet.
Anyway, I have included the Press Release for you to read and encourage you to check out the site at least, because it’s Totally Cool!
PRESS RELEASE:
Shapeways Debuts Do- It -Yourself
3D Printed Photographs
Easy-To-Use Shapeways Photoshaper Allows Anyone To Turn Their Favorite Photos Into 3D Printed Objects
Eindhoven, The Netherlands (March 10, 2009) – Today, Shapeways has introduced the all-new Shapeways Photoshaper, a groundbreaking new service that allows anyone to turn digital photographs into 3D printed objects.
Users can logon to Shapeways.com, upload any photo and order their creations directly from Shapeways. Whether it’s a beautiful landscape, a memorable child’s photo or a work of art, with the Photoshaper anyone can transform their images into 3D with just a few mouse clicks and without any 3D software experience required.
“Shapeways really makes 3D creation fun, easy and available for everyone,” commented Peter Weijmarshausen, CEO of Shapeways. “With Photoshaper we have empowered the average consumer to tap into technologies that used to be out of reach. In doing so Shapeways redefines online consumerism with direct access to unique and individually customized products that were never available before.”
Based on the contrast of the picture (light and dark) the Shapeways Photoshaper automatically creates a depth-layered 3D object that can be printed by Shapeways with the latest in 3D printing technology (Rapid Prototyping). The 3D photo will be produced and delivered globally within 10 days and costs between $40-50 (USD), including shipping. The Photoshaper accepts JPEG, PNG and GIF images (for best results use 1.5 megapixel or better which is supported by most digital cameras). The size of the 3D photo is 13cm – 9cm (5.11” – 3.5”) landscape and portrait.
