You’re listing to the Totally Cool Tech Podcast #459 – Exhaustion, for Sunday, May 16th, 2010. I’m Norbert Davis, your host.

Totally Cool Tech is a proud member of the Techpodcasts.com network. “If it’s tech, its here!”, and the Blubrry.com podcast community, where podcasters and listeners come together.

May 15th marked my 5 year anniversary in podcasting. I started out with the Norbtek.info Podcast” back in May of 2005 and after 2-1/2 years I reinvented the show as The Totally Cool Tech Podcast. I’m still loving every minute of it.

On this episode of the Totally Cool Tech Podcast:

Listener feedback – Listener Cameron asks:

Hello,
I am looking for a handcrank radio, with a built in speaker, just like the average short-wave radio, but I need it to have internal memory, so I can upload mp3 audio to it. I want a single unit that will play mp3 audio for a whole room. I do not want to have to use headphones.
The intent here is to give away to poor people in rural locations where they are fortunate to ever see a battery, let alone have an occasional supply, and I want to load certain mp3 files to it first. A fancy video player is not needed, but radio capabilities are a good plus.
Do you know of such a device? If so, email it to me @ tctpodcast@gmail.com.

Recently I was invited to review a couple of products from BudgetGadgets.com, an electronics & gadgets vendor based in Shenzhen, China. They have been in the online retail/wholesale business since 2003 and are able to provide customers with quality products, great service, and a very decent price.

I was able to use and evaluate a couple of items from Budgetgadgets.com, a USB to serial communications converter and a USB hub/card reader. Here are my experiences with the products and the company.

The first was a USB converter for communications with industrial devices. I used this device to verify that monitoring communications wiring for industrial devices installed by one subcontractor was correctly installed and that the devices themselves were communicating and could be monitored by another subcontractor.

The package from BudgetGadgets.com had all the parts and device drivers that I needed for allowing my Windows laptop to use the converter. The adapter for the 9 pin RS485 that connects to the communications wiring was easy to understand and hookup and the documentation was included on the CD ROM that came with the package.

I was able to check out and verify everything on my job site thanks to this device. This was a great price bargain as well at $14.67 as similar devices that I found online were 3 to 10 times the cost for the same thing.

The second device was an All-in-one USB 2.0 Card read/writer and hub. This device was perfect to hook up to my 8 year old Pentium 4 Windows PC. I use this PC for the storage of all my digital photos but I never had a card reader of any kind installed into it. Now with this add-on device I was able to directly download pictures directly to the PC rather than have to load it upon another PC or hook the camera up via USB. Everything I needed to hook up to my PC came with the hub/reader/writer. There was a USB extension cable which allowed me to have the hub on my desk where I needed it and more convenient to use. As pleased as I was about the ability to read or write to media cards, the addition of multiple USB ports to my machine was great too.

The BudgetGadgets.com site was a pleasure to visit as it is easy to navigate and well laid out. Finding products based on category, price range, or via direct search was simple and easy. Ordering items is not complicated at all and equal to that of many larger on-line vendors like Amazon, TigerDirect, and Newegg. I received my packages in excellent shape as they were shipped in bubble envelopes protecting them from typical banging and bumping experienced with shipping. The quality of materials and workmanship of the products was equal to anything I have ordered from large on-line vendors. I would recommend Budgetgadgets.com to anyone looking to get electronic devices or gadgets and wanting great prices.

If you have a need for electronic devices and gadgets, I highly suggest that you visit Budgetgadgets.com to see if they have what you need. And if you do find something you like on their site, you can get 5% off your order by using the Promo Code: NM5OFF4.

The total value of the items that I reviewed was less than $25 USD and Budgetgadgets.com was kind enough to allow me to keep the products that I reviewed. With that being said, it should give you a good idea as to how great the prices are at Budgetgadgets.com, but don’t take my word alone, go visit the site and see for yourself what they have to offer and their great pricing, and the shipping is always free too.
