Wave Riding

March 3rd, 2008

Solo sailor Kenichi Horie has used wind, solar and man power through a series of nautical adventures. For his next bold undertaking, he will harness the energy of the waves. Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Company has finished construction of the Suntory Mermaid II, the world’s first wave powered boat. With an overall length of 9. 5 meters, a maximum width of 3.5 meters and a weight of three tons, the Suntory Mermaid II will be brought to its homeport at Nishinomiya Yacht Harbor. Following test sails and training in Osaka Bay and through the Kii Channel, Horie will depart from Honolulu’s Hawaii Yacht Club in mid-May 2008 and cross about 6,000 kilometers of ocean before arriving back at the Kii Channel. The trip’s planned duration is about two and a half months.
